Choosing a painter in Vancouver is more straightforward than it sounds, but the Vancouver market has enough unqualified operators that knowing what to look for matters. The questions are simple: Are they licensed? Insured? Do their crews have WorkSafeBC coverage? Can they provide references from recent similar work? Will they give you a written quote that specifies the scope? If you get clean answers to those five questions, you're probably dealing with a legitimate contractor.

This guide walks through the full process, from finding painters to evaluating quotes to what to watch for before signing.

Step 1: Find Painters Who Work in Your Area

Start with referrals from neighbours or friends in Vancouver who've had recent painting work done. A referral from someone whose home you can actually look at is more valuable than any online review. If you don't have a referral, Google "painters [your neighbourhood]" and look for contractors with a real business presence, a physical address, a website, and multiple verified reviews.

Look for painters who specifically mention your area, Kitsilano, West Vancouver, Burnaby or North Vancouver, because local experience matters. A painter who works regularly in your area knows the specific conditions, the building stock, and the local permit or heritage requirements that might apply.

Step 2: Ask These Questions Before Getting a Quote

Questions to ask a painter in Vancouver before inviting them to quote:

Are you licensed to do business in BC? A legitimate painting contractor is registered as a business in British Columbia. This is a baseline, not a differentiator.

Do you carry commercial general liability insurance? CGL insurance covers damage to your property during the job. Ask for a certificate of insurance, any legitimate contractor has one ready. If they hesitate or make excuses, move on.

Are your workers covered by WorkSafeBC? WorkSafeBC coverage protects you from liability if a worker is injured on your property. Ask for a clearance letter. This matters more than most homeowners realise, without it, you could be liable for medical costs if someone is hurt while working on your home.

How long have you been working in Vancouver? There's no substitute for genuine local experience with Vancouver's building stock and climate conditions.

Can you provide references from similar work? Ask specifically for references from projects similar to yours, exterior repaint on a stucco home, interior painting in an occupied house, deck staining. A contractor with genuine experience will have no trouble providing these.

Step 3: Get Written Quotes From Two or Three Painters

Getting two or three quotes for finding reliable painters in Vancouver is sensible, it gives you a market reference and surfaces differences in scope that aren't obvious from the first quote. But compare quotes on what's included, not just the price.

A proper written quote specifies: which surfaces are being painted, how many coats, what prep work is included (power washing? caulking? priming?), the paint product and brand, the timeline, and the warranty. If any of those items are missing, ask for them in writing before comparing.

The lowest quote is rarely the best value. When one quote is significantly lower than the others, 30% or more, something specific has been cut. The most commonly omitted item is prep work. A coat of paint applied over a dirty, mildewed, or poorly prepared surface fails fast. The repaint costs the full amount again. The prep is where the job lives or dies.

Step 4: Red Flags to Watch For

Cash only, no invoice. A contractor who asks for cash without a paper trail has no interest in the paper trail for a reason. This usually means unlicensed, uninsured, or both.

A payment request that does not match the written scope. Ask what the deposit covers, when later payments are due, and what happens if the start date moves. Get that answer in writing before you sign.

Vague quote. "Paint interior walls, $2,500" tells you nothing about how many rooms, how many coats, what product, or what prep. A vague quote produces a vague job.

No insurance when asked. If a contractor can't produce a certificate of insurance within a business day of being asked, they don't have one. This is a firm stop.

Pressure to decide immediately. "This price is only good today" is a pressure tactic, not a business reality. A legitimate contractor's quote is good for a reasonable period. Take the time to compare.

Very short prep phase. Watch the first day. If a crew shows up and starts painting within an hour without washing the surface, scraping, caulking, or priming, the prep has been skipped. This is hard to recover from once the paint is on.

Step 5: Understand What You're Agreeing To

Before signing, read the quote. Confirm the start date and timeline. Confirm who will be on site (the owner, a crew, a subcontractor). Confirm the payment schedule, typically a deposit, a mid-job payment, and a final payment on completion after a walkthrough.

For exterior work in Vancouver, confirm that the schedule accounts for weather. A painting contractor who doesn't discuss the weather forecast for an exterior job is either inexperienced or planning to paint on a wet surface. Exterior painting in Vancouver's climate requires genuine schedule management around rain.

What to Expect From a Reliable Vancouver Painting Contractor

A licensed painter in Vancouver will arrive when scheduled, complete the prep before painting, use the specified products, keep the site clean during the job, and do a walkthrough with you before calling the job done. Any items from the walkthrough that need addressing are fixed before final payment.

Ask for the documentation relevant to your project: insurance information, WorkSafeBC clearance where applicable, a written quote, a matching invoice, and clear workmanship terms. Keep the documents with the contract.

Coastal Painters provides all of that on every project. Our interior painters vancouver and exterior painters vancouver work across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Call (778) 874-4042 to start the quote process.
