Painting prep tips for Vancouver homeowners fall into two categories: what a professional painter does before the first coat goes on, and what you as the homeowner can do beforehand to make the job run more smoothly and efficiently. Understanding both helps you know what to expect, what to ask about, and what you can actually do to help.

The short version: the painter handles the surface prep, cleaning, filling, sanding, priming. The homeowner handles access, decisions, and clearing the space. When both sides are ready, the job runs faster and the result is better.

What Your Painter Should Handle: Surface Prep

Cleaning the Surface

For interior painting preparation, walls need to be cleaned before any paint is applied. Kitchen walls accumulate cooking grease that acts as a barrier between the existing surface and the new paint, paint won't bond over it. Bathrooms accumulate soap residue and mildew. Even walls that look clean often have surface contamination that affects adhesion.

In Vancouver specifically, exterior surfaces accumulate significant mildew and organic growth year-round. A power wash before any exterior painting is not optional, it's the baseline for a finish that bonds and holds. If your painter doesn't discuss washing before exterior painting, ask about it directly.

Filling and Sanding

Nail holes, small cracks, dents, and surface imperfections all need to be filled before painting. Paint does not hide surface defects, it accentuates them by creating a uniform sheen that reflects light across imperfections evenly. A bump or hole that looks minor on an unpainted wall will look obvious under two coats of eggshell.

Sanding after filling creates a smooth surface for the primer coat. On previously painted walls, light sanding also scuffs the surface to improve mechanical adhesion of the new coat.

Caulking

Caulking gaps at trim junctions, where baseboards meet walls, where window casings meet walls, where trim meets ceiling, is part of interior prep on a proper paint job. A freshly painted room with uncaulked gaps at the trim looks unfinished. On exteriors, caulking around windows, doors, and all trim junctions is critical for weatherproofing in Vancouver's rain.

Priming

New drywall absorbs paint unevenly without a sealer primer, the result is visible variations in sheen across the wall surface. Bare wood absorbs paint at different rates than previously painted surfaces and needs priming for even coverage. Any areas where old paint has been removed back to bare substrate need priming before the finish coat. A painter who skips priming on surfaces that need it is skipping the step that determines how even the finish coat looks.

What Homeowners Can Do Before Painters Arrive

Clear the Space

The most practical thing you can do before interior painters arrive is clear the room. Move furniture toward the centre and away from walls, or move it to another room entirely if space allows. Remove wall art, mirrors, curtain rods, light switch covers, and anything attached to the walls that can be detached easily. The more access the painter has to the walls, the faster they work, time spent moving around large furniture is not painting time.

We protect remaining furniture and flooring with drop cloths, but a cleared room means a faster job and less risk of accidental contact.

Decide on Colours Before the Job Starts

Colour decisions made after the job starts cost time and materials. If you haven't finalised your colours before the painters arrive, do that first. This is not a small thing, a colour change mid-job can mean a day of work lost while the new product is sourced and dries between coats.

If you're unsure about colours, ask about our paint colour consultation service before booking. Working through colour selection at the consultation stage saves time and stress during the job.

Address Any Required Repairs First

If you know there are wall repairs beyond what a painter handles, water damage that hasn't been fixed, mould, structural cracks, address those before the painting job starts. A painter can fill small cracks and nail holes. They can't fix active water intrusion or mould issues, and painting over unresolved problems makes them harder to address later.

For exterior work, flag any obvious rot, failing flashings, or significant structural caulking failures before the quote visit. These need to be scoped and some may require a trades contractor separate from the painter.

Plan for Ventilation

Interior painting requires adequate ventilation, both for the painter's working conditions and for the paint to dry and cure correctly. Open windows where possible on the day of painting and in the days after. In Vancouver's cool, damp climate, adequate air movement is particularly important, paint takes longer to cure in high humidity without air movement.

If you've requested low-VOC products (which we use on request), ventilation is still important, low-VOC doesn't mean zero-VOC, and fresh air accelerates curing regardless of the product.

Pre-Painting Checklist: Interior Rooms

Use this checklist before interior painters arrive:

  • Furniture moved away from walls or to another room
  • Wall art, mirrors, and hanging items removed
  • Light switch covers and outlet covers removed (or left for the painter)
  • Curtain rods down if accessible, or left for the painter to work around
  • Colour decisions finalised and paint ordered or confirmed
  • Any significant wall repairs completed (water damage, mould) before painter arrives
  • Pets and children's schedules accounted for, painting day is disruptive
  • Ventilation plan in place for during and after painting

Pre-Painting Checklist: Exterior

Before exterior painters arrive:

  • Patio furniture, potted plants, and garden decorations moved away from house perimeter
  • Exterior hose bib accessible, we need a water connection for power washing
  • Cars moved from immediately adjacent to the house on painting days
  • Any damaged boards, rot, or failing caulking flagged for assessment
  • Colour decisions finalised, including body colour, trim colour, and any accent colours
  • Downspouts and gutters cleared, clogged gutters run water down exterior walls and can affect fresh paint
  • Any window or door that shouldn't be painted flagged clearly

What We Handle on Site

To be clear about what you don't need to do: we protect your floors with drop cloths, tape and mask surfaces that aren't being painted, cover light fixtures, protect planters and garden beds on exteriors, and clean up fully at the end of each day. You don't need to tape anything yourself, that's our job and we do it properly.

Surface prep, filling, sanding, priming, caulking, is included in the painting scope and you don't need to do any of it. If we find something during prep that changes the scope (more filling needed than expected, areas of stucco that need treatment before painting), we'll tell you before addressing it.
